The Maui Police Department’s Juvenile Counseling Program was established on March 16, 1970 as part of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Division.

The goals of this program are to prevent juvenile delinquency and to reduce recidivism among status offenders and minor law violators.   Counseling may include the review of a juvenile’s education, recreational, social and family history, the formulation of plans to implement within the family and follow-up services.   The counselors may also make referrals to other agencies in cases where additional services are required.

Youths referred to this program are considered “high risk” due to their involvement in status offenses or minor law violations.  Participation in the Juvenile Counseling Program is voluntary and requires parental permission.  Parental involvement is essential to improve relationships and communication within the family.
